CONNECTICUT LICENSING STATUS EXPLAINED

Status
Description
CERTIFIED PUBLIC ACCOUNTANT LICENSE
A Connecticut C.P.A. License holder is licensed to practice public accountancy. A license holder may hold themselves out as a C.P.A. and engage in the practice of public accountancy, as long as the license remains in good standing with the Connecticut Board of Accountancy as prescribed by the Board’s regulations and statutes. The practice of public accountancy is defined as performing for the public or offering to perform for the public for a fee by a person or firm holding themselves out to the public as a licensee one or more kinds of services involving the use of accounting or auditing skills (§20-279 b (7)). 
CERTIFIED PUBLIC ACCOUNTANT FIRM PERMIT  
"A firm which offers or performs professional services and holds a CT CPA firm permit. May be an individual person or a legal entity. Required in CT in order for the firm to use the CPA title or offer attest services. (g) The following firms shall be required to hold a permit issued pursuant to this section: (1) Any firm with an office in this state performing attest services; (2) Any firm with an office in this state that uses the title “Certified Public Accountant”, “CPA”, “CPA firm” or other similar title; or (3) Any firm that does not have an office in this state but performs attest services described in subparagraph (A), (C) or (D) of subdivision (13) of section 20-279b for a client having its home office in this state.
CERTIFIED PUBLIC ACCOUNTANT CERTIFICATE
A Registered Connecticut C.P.A. Certificate does not license the certificate holder to practice certified public accountancy. The certificate holder is entitled to use the title Certified Public Accountant or the acronym C.P.A . under limited circumstance; such as, a professional designation on business cards, letterhead, and checks.  An Unregistered Connecticut C.P.A. Certificate does not grant the holder any authority to practice or to use the C.P.A. title.
QUALIFIED
The individual has passed the CPA exam and has received a certificate; however, the certificate is not registered and the individual is not permitted to practice public accountancy unless the individual has a license. The individual is not permitted to use the C.P.A. designation unless the individual registered the issued certificate.
INACTIVE - VOLUNTARY NON-RENWAL
The Board has allowed the licensee to voluntary surrender their license, or the licensee has voluntarily agreed to not renew their license.
INACTIVE
An inactive license is not current and the individual is not  required to take continuing education requirements and they may not engage in the practice of public accountancy, until such time they reinstate their license.
ACTIVE - LICENSED
The credential is current and in good standing.   Continuing Requirements have been met.
INACTIVE - LAPSED
Failed to renew credential. Not in good standing
ACTIVE - REGISTERED

The certificate credential is current and in good standing; however, the person is not permitted to engage in the practice of public accountancy, unless the individual seeks licensure.  A Connecticut C.P.A. Certificate does not license the certificate holder to practice certified public accountancy. The certificate holder is entitled to use the title Certified Public Accountant or the acronym C.P.A . under limited circumstance; such as, a professional designation on business cards, letterhead, and checks.

ACTIVE - CURRENT
The credential is current and in good standing.  Continuing education requirement has been met. The individual may practice public accountancy.
INACTIVE - SURRENDERED
The licensee has surrendered his or her credential and is no longer engaged in the practice of public accountancy.
ACTIVE - APPROVED READY TO PRINT CREDENTIAL    
The credential is current and in good standing.  Initial, renewed or replacement license to be printed.
INACTIVE - DECEASED
Licensee has passed away.
INACTIVE - SUSPENDED

Licensee has been disciplined and is currently under an order for a period of time to comply with specific terms and conditions during which they may not use the CPA designation.  Contact the Board office for further information.

ACTIVE - ACTIVE IN RENEWAL    
The license is current and in good standing. Renewal application is being processed.
